What is a WoodFisch?

The WoodFisch is not the actual name of any person - it is a fun “Nom De Plume” for Kim Fischer. He goes by either “Kim” or “WoodFisch” - your choice. Could even be “Mr. WoodFisch” or even “The WoodFisch"

Friends have asked WoodFisch if he is retired since he could be of retirement age. His reply is, “No, I am NOT retired.” He is prone to be a little short with words. He believes that retirement connotes an abundance of free time. There is no free time for WoodFisch.

And why should there be free time when within lies a BURNING DESIRE to create objects made out of wood?

The WoodFisch name is fairly recent. Known previously only as Kim, he led a professional life in the varied fields of construction management. During that time woodworking was always in the background. Now, no longer in the background, he prowls the earth for more wood to devour. With saws.

WoodFisch has built a most excellent working space and is ready to create for you.

This is what WoodFisch loves to make:

Shelves

Tables

Natural found sculptures

Your own creations

Anything out of reclaimed wood

Specialty items for house restorations

Small Cabinet projects and modifications

Bout anything else

After looking at the WoodFisch’s creations you will agree that mass production is not his forte.

Nor is cutting corners.

As an artisan striving for excellence, attention to detail is pervasive.

Ramblings from the WoodFisch…..

As you look through my website you will notice something missing. Prices. I understand that may disappoint you. After all, what’s the point of having a website if one cannot buy the products. Of course, you can buy the products. Problem originates from me being a one-person business. And not having the energy to setup the mechanisms for online purchasing. Guess I should prioritize, but I am having just too much fun in the shop getting covered with sawdust.

The purpose of my website is to showcase what I do. To communicate to potential customers what is possible. To legitimize myself as a bone fide artisan. Prices and online payment will come with time. At the present, please send a message to me from the Contact page.

Many of the items on my website were made over the years. Some are too dear to me to sell. Some have been passed on to customers. The charcuterie boards are a new thing. Precipitated by finding a source of local wood.

This just came to mind – you go to a restaurant that supports locally sourced products. The daily selections change with the season and availability. That is part of what interests and drives you to visit there. That’s kind of me. There are many local wood products that I wish to use for my creations. The supply of this material is finite – when I find it I want to exploit its beauty. Examples of this:

  • The charcuterie boards came from trees downed by a powerful derecho in 2012. They were sawn into slabs and have been air drying under cover since then. Not much of it left, and when I use it up, that’s it.

  • The vintage beadboard used in the bathroom vanity and bed headboard…. An acquaintance like to collect things. He pulled the beadboard from an old structure. When I started working with it I was unsure what to expect. So many colors, I presume from different rooms. Scraping off the loose paint – the vibrancy of the colors amazed me. While the colors do not match, placed alongside each other, as a whole, brings them together and makes something beautiful.

  • The rhododendron roots were a rare find – acquired in 2001. They have stayed with me through many moves. Impossibly difficult to work with. My stockpile has dwindled quite a bit. I am waiting for the right inspiration before I work with what is left.
